(Belleville IL April 20, 2013) The Unions (4-2) split in their round robin with their Metro East rivals, the Belleville (IL) Stags, and the Unions’ feeder team, the St. Louis Cicada, on Saturday at Moose Meadow in Swansea, IL
It turned out to be a beautiful day for vintage base ball as the Jefferson Barracks Nine lost their first game to the Stags 4-3 before winning their second over the Cicada 8-5….the Unions settled down after a rough first inning against the Stags, but a stout Belleville defense led by dazzling plays by rover Dutch and scout Rooster held the Union strikers at bay for most of the game in route to a win for the hosts….Grizzly hurled the distance on the platter for the Unions.
The JB Nine bounced back in their second game of the round robin against the Cicada….the Unions won 8-5 after being down early 4-2….great play from Cicada scouts Tank and Sticks helped cut short a few Union rallies late….Gorilla and Grizzly split the hurling duties in the second game win.
Cicada hurler Knapsack comment on the Stags hitting prowness on this day. “It usually takes most players about a season under their belt before they get use to swinging at slow pitching and where to hit the ball in the Vintage Game. Last year the Stags were a whole club of rookies, but no anymore. They really struck the ball well today. Liners, hitting to the opposite field. From here on out, we are going to have a lot of fun playing these guys in hard fought matches.”
The Unions will be back in action Saturday, May 4th in Murphysboro, IL against the Murphysboro Clarkes….doubleheader begins at 1pm….
