Lafayette Park, St Louis (June 15) – The Unions’ defense proved as stifling as the heat for the Lafayette Cyclone during there 2nd and 3rd match’s against one another this season. In the first match Unions and pitcher’s Randall “Slug” Richard & John “Knapsack” Mena retired the first 10 out of 11 Cyclone strikers en route to a 4 – 3 victory.

The Unions jumped to an early lead when they plated two in the top of the 1st inning and added two more in the 2nd, this was all they could muster up as the Cyclone defense and the pitching of Chris “Bookworm” Duggan shut down the Unions potent bats. Lafayette Cyclone chipped away at the Union lead with a run in the 4th and two more in the 6th. However, the Unions defense clamped down in the final frame for a well earned win against there friendly foes from Lafayette.

The Unions’ relatively timid offense left few candidates for striking honors, but the finest performances came from Matt “Scoops” Lurk who reached base all four times and Randall “Slug” Richard pitched 3 innings of one run ball.

The second match of the day would start much like the first with the Unions platting four runs in the 2nd and three more in the 3rd to jump out to a 7 – 0 lead and as the game was looking like it might get away from the Cyclone there defense came to the rescue which helped jump start there bats as they added two in the 5th and two more in the 6th as Ross “Atlas” Gallentine,  the striker of the day for the Cyclone, mashed a majestic shot over the Unions’ left scout for a triple.

Unions’ pitcher “Slug” Richard came on in the 7th and sealed the 7 – 4 victory for the Unions. Striking honors for the game went to Shaun “The Hammer” Kennedy who went 3 – 3, double, two runs scored and one rbi. Dave “Beans” Heim likewise tallied one ace, two rbi, two hits and one line drive catch that helped preserve the win.
