(MURPHYSBORO, IL )August 17, 2013- Matt ‘Mayhem’ Moushey and Matt ‘Scoops’ Lurk (co-offensive ballists of the day) stepped up big in the second game as the Unions split a doubleheader with the Murphysboro (IL) Clarkes. The Clarkes won the first match 3-0 and the Unions took the second match 9-3 in front of a nice gathering of cranks Saturday at Longfellow Park in Murphysboro, IL.
The Jefferson Barracks Nine were shut down by Robert ‘Mr. Knute’ Shultz in the first game, managing only seven hits, including a double by Dave ‘Beans’ Heim. The Clarkes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning with a big offensive front right out of the gates in the bottom half of the frame, which is all that would be mustered the rest of the game for both clubs.
Game two started the same way with the Clarkes tallying all three of their aces in the top of the first before the Unions scattered nine across the seven-inning match to salvage a split on the day. Offensive highlights in the win included Mayhem (2-for-3, 5 RBIs), Scoops (3-for-3, double, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Brian ‘Ricochet’ Robison (3-for-3, 3 runs), and Jamie ‘Rabbit’ VanDernoot (3-for-4, 3 runs).
Scoops and Kaiser dazzled in the field with some spectacular plays for the JB Nine, thus earning our co-defensive ballists of the day….the Unions end up edging their friends from southern Illinois in their 2013 season series, 2-1.
The Unions (23-9) will be back in action next Saturday (8/24) vs. the St. Louis Perfectos at Lurk Field in Jefferson Barracks Park….doubleheader begins at 1pm.
