(SAINT LOUIS) August 24, 2013 –Some will say it was the timely hitting. Others will point at the lucky breaks. But I prefer to think it was Lucky Lucy that sparked a Unions game winning rally. During the toughly played match, play was halted as a fan ran out on the field. Okay, it was a dog crank. But it was not something you see everyday, just like a late Unions rally. Thank you Rally Dog. You’re always welcomed to Lurk Field!
The Unions fell four aces short of a doubleheader sweep in their fifth and sixth meetings of the 2013 season with the St. Louis Perfectos. The home team won game one 7-6 in eight innings before dropping the afternoon cap to the Perfectos 8-5.
Leading the Unions’ offense in game one was Jim ‘Noodles’ Stockglausner (3-for-4, triple, run, 2 RBIs), and Matt ‘Scoops’ Lurk (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 runs, RBI)….John ‘Knapsack’ Mena started in the hurler’s box with aid from Kyle ‘Gorilla’ Meyer who tossed an inning.. T
The key defensive play and turning point in this game was a triple play in the fourth inning turned by Chad ‘Lefty’ Laramore, Jeremy ‘Zippy’ Hunter, and Mike ‘Part-Time’ Ashley (9-6-2) that got the Unions out of a key jam, thus allowing them to come back and win the game in extra innings….the Perfectos used a few big innings early in the afternoon cap to stay ahead of the Unions, as well as stellar hurling from Tony ‘Danger’ Pellegrino and a stout defense to force the doubleheader split..
The JB Nine were paced at the platter in game two by Noodles (2-for-3, run, RBI), Gorilla (3-for-3, RBI), and Knapsack (2-for-3, 2 runs)….Noodles and Scoops were awarded the Union ‘Offensive Players of the Day’, while Noodles was the ‘Defensive Player of the Day’ for his numerous rally saving plays in left field….the Unions (24-10) will be back in action Saturday, 9/7 against the St. Louis Brown Stockings in Eureka….doubleheader begins at 1pm….
