MARCH 22 (ST.LOUIS)- Facing a Lafayette Square Cyclone club that has been known to shut down and keep the Unions’ high-powered strikers at bay on occasion in some historical low-scoring contests between the two, last Saturday was quite the opposite with an offensive festival put on between both club in last Saturday’s doubleheader….the Unions won the opener by a score of 11-5 before winning the late-afternoon cap 17-7.

The Cyclone always make it difficult for the JB Nine, and this past weekend was no exception despite the score and a few big innings for the Unions….the doubleheader got off to an ominous start for the JB Nine as they struck for seven unanswered aces through five innings, including the first Unions home run of the season by Tony ‘Huck’ LaBarge….the Unions would not have any more big innings in game one, but would score an ace in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings which would help keep the Cyclone at bay until the end.

In game two, the Cyclone got out to a quick two-ace lead in the top of the 1st before the Unions struck for two in the bottom half of the inning plus nine more in the bottom of the second to keep their distance from a Lafayette Square club that refused to give up, including two home runs from Mark ‘Wheels’ Olmsted….Jeremy ‘Zippy’ Hunter homered for the Unions in game two…..Jay ‘Rx’ Martin and Chad ‘Lefty’ Larimore added 7 hits on the day, while Matt ‘Scoops’ Lurk had 6….all three strikers were a perfect 1.000 for the afternoon….Randall ‘Slug’ Richard, Jeremy ‘Grizzly’ Murrish, Huck, and Roger ‘Yankee’ Neff all shared hurling duties in the wins….the Unions start the 2014 season off 2-0.

The JB Nine will play a doubleheader at Lurk Field in Jefferson Barracks Park Saturday at 12pm vs. the St. Louis Brown Stockings….this will be the season opener for the Brownies….huzzah!
