(June 14. 2014  DANVILLE IL)   One thing for sure on this day – it was a picture perfect day for vintage baseball play.  The field at Kennekuk County Park in Danville, IL was cut to perfection for the two contests between the Unions and Vermillion Voles. The JB Nine (and we had only nine) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead aided by a three-run home run by Tony ‘Huck’ LaBarge (one of three on the day). Later the Vols would answer back with two aces and cut the lead to 6-2, but the crafty hurling of  Randall ‘Slug’ Richard and solid defense all around would keep the Unions in the lead for good in a 10-3 win in game one.  The next match saw, the JB Nine get it going early on with some hot bats.

In the bottom of the first inning the visitors tallied two aces, in what was a close match halfway throughout.  Slug hurled the first two innings nearly perfect before Kyle ‘Gorilla’ Meyer came in for a change of pace….’Monkey Man’ gave up three aces during his four inning stint (all in his first inning at the line), but got help from some stout defense with a pair of 1-2-3’s before Roger ‘Switch’ Neff would close out the game in the seventh….the Unions held off the Voles 11-4 in the finale….huzzah to all the ballists for two great games, to the cranks for a good turnout, and to the Voles for their great hospitality that they always provide….back home next weekend (Saturday, June 21st) at Lurk Field in Jefferson Barracks Park for a round-robin with the Minnesota Union and Belleville (IL) Stags….first match is at 12pm….
