On Saturday, September 6th, the St. Louis Brown Stockings Base Ball Club made the short trek east to south St. Louis to take on the Unions BBC at Lurk Field in Jefferson Barracks Park….in the first match of the day, the Blue strikers broke out their bats sparingly throoughout after the Brownie Nine jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after one inning of play….the Unions would regain the lead in the top of the third and in the fifth would tag on another ace in building a lead that the Brown Stockings would be unable to surmount….when the dust settled, the final score was 7-2 to the advantage of the Unions.

Hand of BaderThe JB Nine were led by Jeremy ‘Zippy’ Hunter (5-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 aces, 2 RBIs), Matt ‘Scoops’ Lurk (4-for-5, 2 aces, RBI), and the trio of Matt ‘Mayhem’ Moushey, John ‘Knapsack’ Mena and Jon ‘Badger’ Beidelshies who each had three hits….other highlights included Dave ‘Beans’ Heim (2 RBIs) and Badger, who provided a nice sliding catch to the end the game….

In the second match, outside of a six-run third inning by the Unions, there wasn’t much life in the bats between both clubs, as the Blue were a able to hold the Brown Stockings to no aces, but not to sell short the Emmenegger Nine who held the Unions at bay for most of the nine-contest outside of that big Union inning….in the end, the Unions finished with a total of eight aces on the striking end to take the win.

Knapsack went all nine innings at the hurler’s line to record the shutout benind some strong fielding by the JB Nine fielders….the Unions were led by Scoops (4-for-5, 2 aces, RBI), Jay ‘Rx’ Martin (3-for-5, ace, RBI), and Mayhem (3-for-5, ace, 2 RBIs) in an evenly contest match despite the final count of 8-0….also, Knapsack became the first vintage pitcher to put on a jacket after getting on base….

The Unions BBC will travel to French Lick, IN for the French Lick Festival (aka Vintage Base Ball World Series) on Saturday, September 13th and Sunday, September 14th for a showdown with Indiana’s best and the Belleville (IL) Stags, who will be making their first appearance in the yearly festival….
